** IMPORTANT NOTE: Many golf courses in San Diego now aerate only 1/2 the surface of each green at a time. This procedure allows at least 1/2 of each green to be in good shape and playable and greatly minimizes the impact of the required maintenanace.
HOW IT WORKS FOR SAN DIEGO GOLF COURSES
Most San Diego golf courses conduct their major annual aeration and overseeding maintenance sometime between September and December to ensure the courses look great during the peak visiting golfer season of January thru May. Most San Diego golf courses then aerate their greens again sometime between February and June. Although the golf courses do not perform their maintenance at the same time, their schedules do overlap and many golf courses will not be in the best of shape at exactly the same time. If you expect and demand optimum course conditions you must ensure you know the maintenance schedule before you confirm your reservation and show-up to play. Some San Diego golf courses actually close the entire course for a certain period of time while the 27 hole golf courses close one nine hole course at a time, leaving the other 18 holes open and in very good condition. Some San Diego golf courses have reduced green fees while others do not.
Deciding when a golf course is ready for play after aeration and overseeding maintenance is always very subjective and it varies greatly from golfer to golfer. Although each course publishes a tentative aeration, overseeding and "Cart Paths Only" schedule, the schedule is always subject to change without notification depending upon the weather and the recovery of the golf course. The golf course will be in various stages of condition as the maintenance proceeds and the course recovers. Some golf courses reduce green fees to compensate for less than perfect playing conditions. However, due to the unpredictability of the weather and the recovery process they do not provide further discounts or refunds if the course conditions do not meet a particular golfer's expectations on a particular day.
SAN DIEGO GOLF CRITERIA - GUIDANCE -
POLICIES
As closely as we track San Diego golf course conditions we cannot guarantee we will be aware of all changes to a course's maintenance schedule or the progress of a course's recovery. In addition it is virtually impossible to track all the green fee changes that may occur as each of the San Diego golf courses goes through the maintenance and recovery process. As a result we take a very conservative position in recommending courses during this time of the year and we do not offer reduced green fees. You must contact the course directly to take advantage of reduced green fees that may be available.
We BEGIN our Maintenance Criteria and
Guidance one week prior to the date of the scheduled over seeding.
We END our Maintenance Criteria
and Guidance one week after the ending date of the cart paths only
restriction.
1. AERATION - We do not recommend a San Diego golf course for two weeks after completion of the aeration. (Exception - A course that aerates the greens one or two at a time throughout the year)
2. OVERSEEDING - Most courses
stop watering and begin scalping parts of the course 7 - 10 days prior to the
scheduled start of overseeding. In some cases the course can begin drying out
and turning brown very quickly.
3. CART PATHS ONLY - All courses
follow their over seeding with a scheduled "Cart Paths Only" restriction for a
certain period of time. This restriction can be lifted early or extended
depending upon the weather and the recovery progress of the course.
OUR SAN DIEGO GOLF RECOMMENDATIONS
We strongly recommend that our on-line customers carefully review the dates and
criteria we have listed for the Maintenance Criteria and Guidance
BEFORE booking any San Diego golf reservations on-line. The green fees listed
on our web site are the regular green fees. They cannot be adjusted lower if
you book a reservation within the explained maintenance period and you get out
to the course to find less than perfect playing conditions and a reduced
"maintenance" green fee offered at the Pro Shop counter.
If you really must play a particular San Diego golf course that is
undergoing maintenance and you don't mind less than perfect playing conditions
as well as the possibility of a having to follow a "Cart Paths Only"
Restriction or you would like to save a few dollars on reduced maintenance
green fees - we recommend you call and book your San Diego tee times
directly with the golf courses after getting an update about the current course
conditions and any special maintenance green fees that may be
available.
There are always several golf courses in San Diego that have either not yet
started or have already completed their annual maintenance and
aeration. Our Call Center Golf Coordinators will be happy to check availability
and provide you with recommendations and a list of those San Diego golf
courses.
