• With very few exceptions, to buy Trophy Club tickets or "Grounds Only" tickets for Thursday through Sunday your only option is to buy them "above face value" on the secondary ticket market either directly from an individual or indirectly from local and national ticket brokers or... by purchasing U.S. OPEN Golf Packages from hotels, tour operators and other sources that may include hotel, condo, an airline ticket, a car rental and golf.  Of course, with these packages the extra cost is hidden within the package and it will be hard to tell how much above "face value" you are actually paying... although you can be sure it is typically a significant amount.

• Although deciding how much above "face value" you are willing to pay and judging whether the supply and demand will drive those prices up or down so you can decide "WHEN" to buy are important considerations...the most important deciding factor is deciding how and from what "trusted source" you will buy your U.S. OPEN Golf tickets for Torrey Pines.

• Since this is the first time the US Open will be held on a city-owned Municipal Golf Course, the 2008 US OPEN in San Diego at Torrey Pines is expected to be the most popular in US OPEN history.  Tickets will likely be in very, very short supply as many ticket holders will opt to actually attend this U.S. OPEN rather than sell their tickets to individuals, hotels, travel agents, tour operators and national ticket brokers as they have in past years. Tickets could easily be three times their face value or more, nobody really knows for sure.

• Most tickets had to be bought and paid for “in full” to the United States Golf Association (USGA) at the time of the purchase, in June, July and Aug 2007, even though the USGA does not actually mail the tickets to the buyers until next May 2008...just five weeks before the U.S. OPEN.

• Many National Ticket Companies and Brokers don't explain that very well prior to you purchasing US OPEN Tickets (and sometimes paying non-refundable fees!)  

• They also do business with mostly anonymous people from across the country and have no prior relationship with them.   They mostly rely upon historical supply and demand data to set prices, make promises and collect money based upon “expected inventory and prices.”  In most cases they don't actually have the tickects when they sell them to you.  That "virtual inventory" of tickets and the prices they will be able to buy those future tickets will be determined in May 2008 by the holders of the tickets once they receive them from the USGA and then decide whether to attend the US OPEN or sell the tickets to the National Ticket Companies and Brokers and at what price?

• The National Ticket Companies and Brokers may not be able to produce the amount of tickets at the prices they quoted and collected regardless of their up-front promises.  The reputable brokers will refund your money if they cannot deliver at the price they quoted and collected from you, however, there may be others that will not!   Although getting your money back will be better than losing it, you will still be without a ticket and purchasing one just a couple of weeks prior to the OPEN may be very, very expensive and risky. 

• So again, the most important consideration is to be sure you are dealing with a reputable ticket company, broker or tour operator should you decide to buy tickets off the internet or via a classified ad with a private individual.
